“Music Has an Influence on the Norms and Values of Teenagers”?

Question by chelsea_waffle(:: “Music has an influence on the norms and values of teenagers”?
Hi, I need someone to answer my questions yet apply constructive critisim.

My hypothesis is: “Teenagers that listen to different genres of music display certain behaviour traits and attitudes to violence and substance abuse.”

1.Do teenagers listen to music and watch music videos that appear to glorify the use of narcotics, alcohol and violence?
2.Do certain stereotypes appear more violent after listening to the music that is applied to their stereotype than others?
3.Is there evidence that teenagers emulate activities from songs and music videos?
Why would I get upset? :S
Not for the science fair, if it was wouldn’t it be in science part?

I would suggest a counter-thesis, though you’d probably get upset about it.

1) Most people tend to glorify the use of narcotics/alcohol and violence in one way or another.

Only people i can think of which don’t are flower-arrangers, i mean if you love plants then chances are you’re going to end up either smoking or not smoking the things you love.

2) You mean like gangsta rap?

That ain’t limited to teenagers though, plenty of adults get VERY violent after listening to gangsta rap.

3) Probably, i never paid ANY ATTENTION WHATSOEVER to the songs and music videos you are likely talking about though so i cannot comment.

If you want my opinion, it isn’t the music, it’s what’s in the water.

1. definitely, Im 18 and i have seen countless things that glorify such subject matter. but more than that, people like kurt cobain have been immortalized, and they were almost always drug abusers, however i dont think this affects teenagers to want to do these things necessarily.
2. i dont know how a stereotype can seem violent
3. i listen to very indie/underground music and am not mainstream at all, i also reflect this in the way i dress and sometimes act and such things, so i would say yes. many musicians in these rock bands are my heroes and i really do idolize them, but also im not insane.
