Here’s the scoop: Cocaine,, is the strongest naturally occurring stimulant. What inhalation of cocaine does is stimulate areas of the brain that cause pleasure, euphoria and also can act as an aphrodisiac: the dopamine circuits of the brain.Sounds pretty good — which is why there is a market for it that makes it ounce for ounce more expensive than gold or platinum and of course since it is used up, there is a continuing need to buy more and more.
And now for the bad news: For as good as you feel for the short time following inhaling powdered cocaine, the drop is 10 times worse; and of course the desire to re-experience the high becomes greater. Add in the cost to keep that cycle going until you drop from exhaustion — and did I mention it is a stimulant that blows caffeine away so you’ll be going for probably 24 to 36 hours on this cycle — you can “blow” through a lot of money very quickly. And it’s easy to rationalize or not even care what money you spend. Who needs money for food when you feel this good? Or for rent — you have super- powers, you don’t need sleep you can work and make more money. The rationalizations are endless.
Here is more bad news: Most cocaine that comes into the USA is “cut” with other chemicals. If you were to buy it at its source the cost is not that great and the quality very pure — but as it passes down the drug cartel line, substances are added to make it weigh more, or make it seem to be more pure than it is but stretching the amount of pure cocaine out so more can be sold. One popular addition is anesthetic powders — since the physical feeling of inhaling cocaine is an anesthetic, adding a powdered anesthetic to cocaine makes it appear to be just as strong but in fact is a much weaker mix. This means you need to buy more to get as high (ka-ching!). Other additives can be as basic as powdered milk or sugar — or more sinister and can actually lead to eventually cutting a hole between the cartilage septum (that hard part of the nose that separates the nostrils).
Cocaine is not created in a clean sterile facility. It’s produced in the mountains in old bathtubs with kerosene, gasoline and the cocaine leaves are pounded by the feet of those who pick the leaves. These are not rich people but some of the poorest — and their sanitary conditions leave much to be desired. If they have running water in the pueblo, it is probably there to help with cocaine production, and not to run daily hot water baths and showers. And they rarely have shoes on their feet so when they take turns stomping those leaves in the tub, well, it is all pretty unsanitary. And then you inhale that straight into your nose and lungs. Take a minute to think about that…rather gross.
Then there is the other reason it is called “blow”: What goes into your nose irritates the mucous membranes. After snorting cocaine for awhile, you will start blowing your nose and seeing things you lfrom Ghostbusters. Slimer has nothing on what cocaine does to your mucous membranes.
And what it is going from your nose is also going to your throat and your lungs — and that doesn’t come out as easily. Lung infections, bronchitis and pneumonia as well as a sensitivity for colds increases. And if you have asthma, you will be choking on phlegm — possibly to death. Most deaths from cocaine use are caused by coughing up phlegm when passed out, breathing it back in and choking to the point of causing a heart attack.
But wait there’s more: Continued use of cocaine can lead to something called cocaine psychosis. This was first documented by one of the most famous cocaine experimenters, the famous Dr. Sigmund Freud, father of psycho-therapy. At first Freud thought he had discovered a cure for depression and in fact cocaine is a strong anti-depressant (which explains why many people with depressive illnesses self medicate with it) but Freud discovered that over use caused patients to experience psychotic episodes, and suicide including the death of one of his closest friends.
I could stop now but I should mention that cocaine is metabolized in the body through the liver and the kidneys — and doing so especially in the doses most users require puts a strain on the body that can quickly lead to liver and or kidney failure. It’s one of the reasons David Crosby, the rock musician, required a liver transplant. .
So to summarize all the above: Cocaine? Awesome great high… With a flipside of some of the worst lows and possible suicidal psychosis. If that doesn’t kill you eventually organ failure will — and that’s if you have any money left after it wipes out your bank account and the money from every family member, business partner, friend and associate you can beg borrow and or steal from. And of course, if you get caught, there is that little problem of it being illegal — though by that point, jail and forced rehab might just save your life.
